Backlink Strategy: Buying vs. Building
Do I Need a Backlink Strategy?
Implementing a good backlink strategy is vital to getting your business ranking well in search engines. We have found that the two biggest contributors to climbing the search engine ranks: the addition of SEO-optimized content on a regular basis and a solid backlink plan.
Most businesses overlook the importance of a backlink strategy. Backlinks (when other sites link to your site) are similar to a vote or a rating for your website; the more popular the site (the more backlinks), the better it will rank. However, it’s not as simple as getting the most links to your site as possible. Some sites carry more weight/value than others so one link from a good site can be better for your site than five links from mediocre sites. The same is true for bad sites linking to your site – it can pull your search engine ranking placement (SERP) down.
How Do I Get Backlinks?
Okay, so you know you need backlinks, now you just need to figure out how to get them. So you do a quick Google search and learn that there are plenty of businesses out there that will sell you as many backlinks as you want. Like the old saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Purchasing backlinks is risky. It violates Google’s Webmaster Guidelines and that will have a significant impact on your SERP. Search engines want to see natural link-building (don’t worry, we’ll get to that) instead of purchased links. Can they prove that you purchased them? Not always but that doesn’t mean there isn’t risk. There is ALWAYS risk in buying backlinks.
What Are My Options?
Natural link building is the answer! A good link-building strategy will involve the following:
- Create SEO-optimized quality content for your website on a regular basis
- Dive into the internet to find sites who would find value in your newly created content
- Research those sites to determine if they have enough authority to be worth linking with
- Reach out to the qualified websites to begin to establish a relationship
- Request a link to your site be added to their site (be prepared to do the same for them in exchange)
- They may link to your existing content OR they may want you to provide content FOR their website; you can link to your own site in that content
- Repeat as often as humanly possible
That is the process to get ONE backlink. And trust me, it never goes as planned. You as the business owner probably don’t have the time to do this so you’ll need to find a writer. And because things never go as planned, you’ll probably need a project manager to keep the process going. It is a full-time process no matter how you dice it up.
